The hard-working crew from Korte Tree Service showed up at 6:30 a.m. and made short work of two dead Elm trees. (video 90 sec)

It’s hard to lose an oak tree
We are fortunate to have many huge oak trees on our property. But it still hurts to lose one. This guy was probably somewhere between thirty and fifty years old but he’d been sick for a long time. It was just too painful to look at so we had the guys from Korte Tree Service administer Last Rights.
Jeep: 4WD, Low Range
Had a small brush pile to get rid of but the pickup was full of mulch. Tossed the brush on the back of the Jeep, put it in 4WD/low range and headed down the hill to a big pile. Doesn’t look like much of a hill in the photo above but it’s steep-ish. The Jeep pulled it with no problem.

Decided to add a bit of flair to the Jeep.
Wildlife: Turkeys
One of the best parts of living on wooded property is the wildlife. Deer, squirrels, birds…and turkeys.

Rest in peace old tree
Sometime in the distant past a giant oak tree fell over behind the annex. Not sure why the previous owners didn’t have it cut up and removed, probably would have been expensive.

I got tired of looking at it and cut it up today. Just got tired of looking at it. On the ground now and less visible. (:20 video)
Taking down really big tree
While visiting a friend today, Barb spotted our friends from Korte Tree Service taking down a really big tree. She recorded the clip below around noon and they had been working on it since early morning. Would like to have been there for the entire job.
Pile of rocks
The cone-like dome of the cairn came out pretty much as I had envisioned. I collected as many round-ish rocks as I could find and stacked them as I would cannonballs (not something I’m ever likely to do). Started with a ring (see image below) and worked my way up. This little project took about a month but the heat spell halted work for much of that time.

Weeds whacked
Weeks of 100 degree temps have kept me indoors with a simmering case of summer cabin fever. Today was finally cool enough (mid-80’s) to work outside and I fired up the weed whacker.
Sticker burrs

We have some wicked sticker burrs on the property and I got into a patch yesterday. Easier to toss the socks than try to pick these off. I’ve been wearing knee-hight rubber boots but found they didn’t always protect me from chiggers. Knew there had to be a better way and ordered these.

I’ll hose these down with permethrin and see if they’ll protect from chiggers, ticks and burrs. Stay tuned.
