The American Red Cross and XM Satellite Radio have joined forces to launch Red Cross Radio, a 24-hour, nationwide XM channel to provide help and information for Hurricane Katrina victims, Red Cross staff and volunteers along the Gulf Coast, and other Red Cross workers across the country. Former Learfielder and Jeff City expat Ben Krech played a big role in getting the project airborne.

Gibson’s Virtual Light forsaw 7-Eleven take-over
Seven-Eleven Japan –Japan’s largest convenience store operator with more than 10,000 locations– is going to try to buy 7-Eleven USA. William Gibson predicted this in Virtual Light several years ago but I am damned if I can find my copy so I can illustrate this properly. So, tomorrow, I’m going down to Barnes & Noble and buy another copy so I can properly make this point. Stay tuned.
Sheryl and Lance pedal into the sunset
Okay, it’s official. Lance and Sheryl are engaged, according to statement by Lance on Monday (9/5). Thanks to our Kennett sources, we had it at 9:44 p.m. on Friday (9/2).
Correction courtesy of Everett: “I expect this sort of thing from the Democrat (who made same error), but not from my hero. Peddling has to do with selling stuff out of your backpack or car. Pedaling is what bicyclists do.”
Bad News: Education in Kennett Public School System
Good News: Old Kennett friends read your blog and correct your mistakes.
New Learfield Sports Ops Center
I’ve posted a few times about the year-long renovation project that’s been underway where I work. Big push to have the new Sports Operations Center ready by the first football weekend (September 3, 2005) and they made it.
I stopped by with my camcorder. Once they get this thing fully tweaked, they’ll bring in a professional and really capture just how nice this facility is. Until then, here’s a little taste (6 min, 14 meg, wmv). If you have any trouble watching this, drop me a line.
Podcasting: It’s all about the links
“What’s special about podcasting, though, is how it makes it simple for individuals or companies to express themselves and, if what they have to say is interesting, enlightening, or clever, to earn attention. You can point someone to a worthy podcast through a link on your blog, or an e-mail to a friend, in a way you could never point them to a snippet of radio. That’s powerful.”
“Podcasting isn’t about to kill radio or take it over, but as blogs are doing to publishing, it will make the radio industry reevaluate its relationship with the audience and leverage its strength as a mass medium.”

Where is Mike Neely?
When we last heard from him, boyhood friend Mike Neely was living the good life in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. But the last email address he used is bouncing. Mike, send me your current address. Joe Browning wants it, too. If anyone else has any contact info for Mike, please send it to me at stevemays at Hotmail.com.
Update: Joe Browning came up with Mike’s phone numbers and address. Won’t post them here but will provide upon request.
Katrina refugees welcomed in Bootheel
Charles Jolliff follows up on earlier post about Katrina refugees coming to Kennett:

I found out where Camp McClanahan is where the visitors from the south will be housed. I found the place just east of Friendship. It’s two miles from my house and I never knew of its’ existence. Go figure. I’m sure you know about it though, 25 cottages, a pool, baseball field, a small serenity pool, and auditorium and a few other buildings. I ran into a bunch (20-30) of people and –by luck– talked to the man in charge, Lance Davis, the Deputy Director of Emergency Management for Dunklin County.
Lance said that this complex was a designated Red Cross shelter. There are 25 cottages in the encampment and I went into one and saw a clean and cool place that had two shower areas and bunk beds. That building could sleep 15 easily in just this one place. Davis was expecting 60 people to arrive today, but they were re-routed to a more northern part of Missouri. I also heard from a friend that Benton MO (ten miles north of Sikeston) has already received some people. As of this moment (4:45 pm, Saturday), there are no folks staying at the complex. Davis feels that they will receive some folks on Monday, but more likely Tuesday. There will be medical personnel available to check on the health of those that arrive.
The phone number for the camp is 573-888-6130 if anyone wishes to donate anything, or wants to know what is needed.
Update: First refugees arrived in Kennett late Saturday afternoon. [DDD]
Sheryl and Lance engaged?
That’s the rumor (unconfirmed but good source) from Kennett. Happened Wednesday at undisclosed location. I could find nary a word on the net. Could it be you heard it here first?
Great places to work
The firm where Barb works had a fund-raiser today for the hurricane relief effort. Her boss, prominent attorney and fun guy Harvey Tettlebaum, agreed to wear a clown suit if they raised $2,400.
And everyone in my department at Learfield Communications received this email late this afternoon from our chief financial officer:
I’ve scheduled an off-site meeting the afternoon of September 14 at Clyde’s (our CEO) house. This is a very important meeting and I expect you all to attend if you can. We will watch the movie “Office Space” and drink beer. Please mark your calendars.
AgWired blogs IFAJ conference
Chuck and Cindy Zimmerman (AgWired.com) are blogging the IFAJ (International Federation of Ag Journalists) Congress in Thun, Switzerland. If you need an example of how to effectively blog a conference or event…this is it. The folks at Pioneer Hi-Bred must agree since they’re sponsoring AgWired’s coverage. Frequent posts, photos and audio. I’ve been trying to imagine how a radio station (or network) or TV station or newspaper could provide better coverage but haven’t come up with anything.
