"The Beltway-Blog Battle"

Writing in Time Magazine, James Poniewozek has an interesting take (The Beltway-Blog Battle) on the passing of Tim Russert.

"...the press lost its most authoritative mass-market journalist, just as it is losing its authority and its mass market."

The New Meida vs. Old Media argument got tiresome a long time ago, but Mr. Poniewozek offers a fresh take. A few paragraphs to wet your whistle:

"In their original division of labor, the old media broke news while the blogs dispensed opinion. But look at two of the biggest stories of the Democratic primary: Barack Obama's comments that working-class voters are "bitter" and Bill Clinton's rope-line rant that a reporter who profiled him was a "scumbag." Both were broken by a volunteer for the Huffington Post website, Mayhill Fowler.

Traditional reporters were aghast at Fowler's methods--the Obama meeting was closed to press (she got in as a donor), and Fowler did not identify herself when speaking to Clinton. But mainstream media had no problem treating the scoops as big news; if she had overheard both quotes in the same way but told them to a newspaper instead of publishing them, that would have been considered a coup.

The case against Fowler, in other words, was about process and credentials, not content. If sources stop trusting us, reporters asked, how will we do our jobs? But however sneaky her methods, Fowler's stories prove that one reason sites like Huffington have an audience is the perception that Establishment journalism has gotten better at serving its powerful sources than its public. Fiascoes like the Iraq-WMD reporting gave many the impression that the old rules mainly protect consultant-cosseted public officials who need protection least."

Mr. Poniewozik poses this rather rude question regarding MSM: "...if 3 million people read Drudge and 65,000 read the New Republic, which is mainstream?"

HuffPo starts local news push

Guardian.co.uk: "The Huffington Post is planning to expand into local news across the US, founder Arianna Huffington said last night, beginning with a site edited for the community of Chicago. Huffington said the Chicago site would aggregate news, sports, crime, arts and business news from different local sources as well as contributions from bloggers in what will be the first of a series of projects in "dozens of US cities". The Chicago site will initially be curated by just one editor."

I'm a bit bothered by "aggregate news, sports, crime, arts and business news from different local sources." This suggests (to me) that a HuffPo editor in St. Louis, should they expand to that city, would link to stories from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch website. Or even our statewide news network, when we do a story with St. Louis relevance.

Which is way the web works, of course. I'm not quite sure what about this plan bothers me. Maybe it's: What can a single Huffington Post editor provide that the St. Louis Post-Dispatch website cannot?

Is it a matter of putting an editor in each of the top 50 markets... have them aggregate stories and links to local news sources... and building an online audience that is smaller while accomplishing all of this at a fraction of the overhead?

Or is it that the people behind the Huffington Post just get the web better than most of the other guys?

That was part of a promo I heard on MSNBC tonight. First time I noticed the phrase, "embed video." Even the networks are figuring out it's a good thing to have your video embedded in millions of blogs and websites.

I'm sure there is still a lot of "...no, no! We want them to come to OUR website!" But the web IS the network now and your affiliates are are all those blogs.

Mark Halperin and the folks at Time have their digital shit in one neat pile. Check out this exclusive video with David Axelrod, just after learning that the Associated Press has declared that Obama has secured the majority of delegates to the Democratic convention and will win the nomination.

Looks like Halperin is shooting with a small, hand-held camera. No mic (except for the camera), a little jerky but talk about immediacy.

PageCast: Short, sweet and real

There are just so many things I like about The PageCast, I'm not sure where to begin. First, what is The PageCast.

It's a 60 second video by Time Magazine's Mark Halperin, previewing the three stories that he thinks you should be watching for today. You'll find it on the top/right of The Page. Big whoop, right? Okay, here's some of the things I like about this simple idea (and this particular PageCast):

  • It maximizes the reach of a popular, plugged-in political reporter.
  • It's short. One minute. Easy to watch, easy to produce.
  • It's real. Or at least it appears real. Today's PageCast was recorded in what appears to be Mr. Halperin's hotel room in South Dakota (prior to Tuesday's primary). And he obviously just came from the gym or a run. (Note to TV and Hollywood directors: THIS is what real sweat looks like. Not the little spritz you put under your star's arms and on his chest. Save this image for future reference). And Mark hasn't shaved yet. The guy looks like we all do on a Sunday morning.
  • Zero production. If I had to guess, I'd say he recorded this with his Mac Book sitting on the hotel desk. Probably in one take. He emails the file to some web monkey who uploads to The Page and it's done. No crew, no director, no editing.

The news directors of our radio networks would be great at this. And their listeners/readers/viewers would eat it up.

UPDATE: My buddy Kay reports that Mark Halperin records PageCast between 7-9 a.m. (usually), wherever he happens to be and in whatever he happens to be wearing. If he's on the West Coast, he usually records them at night. He thinks of what he wants to say just before he begins recording (or in the shower or at the gym), on his MacBook Pro (edits with iMovie).

The idea was prompted by the desire to put video on The Page, while keeping it easy to produce and watch. Just as I suspected. Simple idea, well executed.

Next generation radio

Jerry Del Colliano shares a few ideas on "next generation radio" he'll be presenting to an interactive session for radio executives next month:

"My view is that terrestrial radio is now a destination entertainment medium for available listeners - older members of Gen X and the baby boomers."

"...there is no need to produce 24/7 programming online. ... But the radio station of the future may only provide three hours of programming a day – that’s right, a day – and deliver it on a cell phone or mobile device.

"Podcasting will be the new radio for Gen Y."

"The successful content provider in the future will have to unlock the genius of Steve Jobs in understanding a generation they are not in – and Jobs, arguably, knows Gen Y better than they know themselves."

"In the past, a radio station had to be on-air, all the time and doing the same format over and over again. But in the future, new media will require radio broadcasters who want to play in this arena to be many things for which it does not presently have skills."

If you're interested in where radio might be headed, I encourage you to read the full post. Companies that provide programming to radio stations -- like our company-- are sure to be affected by the same forces. Are we ready?

New media can't get here soon enough

Proto-blogger Dave Winer thinks the real problem revealed by Scott McClellan's new tell-all book is that the press was complicit in beating the Iraq war drum:

"But corporate-owned media isn't interested in helping us make decisions as a country, they're only interested in ad revenue. That's why it's so important that we're creating new media that isn't so conflicted, and why the question of whether bloggers run ads or not is far from a trivial issue."

When it comes to national media, there really are not that many outlets that need to be manipulated. Four TV networks; maybe that many cable news channels; a handful of newspapers with national reach. If you can juke them, you've got a lot of the country juked.

The sooner their influence is diminished, the better. There will no longer be even the illusion of "national media" and people will have to work (a little) at being informed. Sure, the willfully clueless will still head for blogs and news sites that confirm their view. But the rest of us will stop trusting (if we haven't already) news organizations that are child's play for political spin-miesters.

Flip Video Camera

Yes, I am aware of how many video cameras I own. No, I do not need another one. I purchased a Flip video camera ($150.00) because I was so intrigued with the idea of a small, inexpensive camera designed to do just one thing. Video.

They even did away with the USB cable and SD cards. You plug the Flip right into the USB port with a little... flip-out USB connector.

The one I got records an hour of video. I think the $100 model does 30 min. Check the website for specs.

Does the Flip take better video than my little Casio. Probably not. Is it as handy as a pocket on a shirt. Yes, indeedy, and it's less than half the price.

I'm not sure what I'll do with mine. I just wanted to see if this device is a cool as I've been hearing and reading. I think it might be. Toss it in your beach bag or your purse and go. Hit the red button and you're recording. Makes the Sony Camcorder seem like a big old pain in the ass to lug around.

Radio with pictures

I gotta face it. I'm a radio guy. I have neither the face nor the concentration for TV. That's my take-away from this morning's live webcast from the Coffee Zone. Just too many things to keep track of. Watch the chat stream, monitor the audio (which is several seconds behind what is being said), look at the camera... whew!

As I replayed our half-hour chat I found myself thinking, this would have been much easier (and less painful for all concerned) if we'd just streamed the audio. Pictures added nothing to our little experiment.

We had 9 or 10 people watching, giving us encouragement in the chat room like parents at a grade-school production of 12 Angry Men, whispering our lines from the wings ("Turn up the mic!").

I think I'm going to look for some sort of live event for the next webcast. Perhaps the 4th of July parade or something. Stay tuned.

Chroma Key effect with CamTwist

I finally figured it out. Sort of. If you can count stumbling on the right configuration and being unable to do it twice in a row "figured it out." But I now know that it can be done. (The background image is lobby of our new offices in Dallas.)

My setup is pretty crude. Two flood lights from Lowe's and a few yards of green felt on the basement wall. It's pretty clear that lighting is critical for this effect and I might have to come up with more or better lights before I try a video background.

And streaming (over the wifi) from the basement isn't gonna cut it. Too slow. Gotta get an Ethernet jack down here or set up in the upstairs office. But hey, that's what weekends are for, right? I'm proud to say I PayPal'd the CamTwist guy $50. It's worth far more than that.

iMage Webcam, CamTwist and Ustream

I've been trying to assemble the best combination (for me) of hardware and software for streaming live video. The ease-of-use and price (free, for now) of Ustream.tv has made it possible for any nimrod to play in Wayne's World.

MacBooks, with the built-in iSight camera, make live video just that much easier but sometimes you want to point the camera the other direction, so an external webcam enters the picture (so to speak).

This weekend I've been playing with the iMage webcam from eCamm. It doesn't look like much but --for $60-- it delivers a very nice image and you can put it in your pocket. I've mounted mine on a small tripod.

The final --and most exciting-- piece of the puzzle has been a freeware app called CamTwist. CamTwist works very well with Ustream.tv and comes with an amazing set of features and a UI that's intuitive and easy to use. If you're interested, I recommend this short video, but let me mention some of the cool things CamTwist does:

  • Stream your desktop. Rather than making your webcam the video source, CamTwist lets you stream all or part of your computer's desktop. Let's say I wanted to show some co-workers in Des Moines how to use a new piece of software. I could simply stream the demo over Ustream. Much better than me trying to remotely "take over" their desktop.
  • Slide Show. The slide show source allows you to stream still pictures. You can drag pictures to the list from your desktop and even iPhoto.
  • Movie. With the movie source, you can play movies over your broadcast. You can drag in several movies to the play list or select a single movie with the movie selection button. Next Saturday George and I are gonna take another run at streaming live from the Coffee Zone. Instead of just watching us yacking for half an hour, we can play video clips as part of the live feed.
  • Flickr Set. Similar to Slide Show, the flickr set source will fetch pictures from a flickr feed and stream them on your broadcast. Why would you want to do this? I don't know, but it's cool.
  • Picture-in-Picture. Once you have your video going, it's possible to overlay another video source on your video.
  • Chroma Key. Sometimes called a Green Screen. This is typically used to create the appearance that something is behind you, such as a picture or a movie. George and I figured out the other features but I haven't tried this one yet.

There you have it. An inexpensive webcam; a feature-rich piece of freeware; and --for now-- a free streaming solution at Ustream.tv. Do we have any program that's especially compelling or useful? No. But that will be the easy part. And when it comes up, we'll be ready to share it with the world.

New report calls podcasting growth "massive"

The guys at Podcasting News share highlights from a new report by Universal McCann that suggests new media is becoming mainstream media. Among the research highlights:

"Blogs are a mainstream media world-wide and a collective rival to traditional media (184m bloggers world-wide, China has the largest blogging community in the world with 42m bloggers) – 73% have read a blog, 45% have started a blog."

Key social platforms mentioned in the report: Blogging; Micro Blogging; RSS; Widgets; Chat Rooms; Message Boards; Podcasts; Video Sharing; Photo Sharing.

If you're in media now and these terms are foreign to you, or seem silly and pointless, the Cluetrain doesn't stop here anymore.

Live from the Zone: May 3, 9:30 a.m.

Georgetv If you're up and online this Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Central, try to catch a few minutes of our live webcast from Yanis Coffee Zone here in Jefferson City. It's one of those "we're doing it just because we can" events. Taisir (Owner and Proprieter) is gonna set up a table in a corner and George Kopp and I will plug in the video camera and shoot the breeze.

If you want to chat, you need to a) create an account at UStream.tv or b) IM me at smaysdotcom. We'll probably go for 30 min or so, unless we start having a lot of fun. If you don't see any live video it means we screwed the pooch and will have to post some lame-ass excuse. We'll have the video player front and center here at smays.com.

On a typical day, we get about 300 visitors here. I'd like to see how many folks we can have watching at any one time.

It's not whining if we have a good reason

Amy Gahran is a former full-time journalist, editor, and managing editor. Today, her work mainly involves conversational online media (weblogs, forums, wikis, e-mail lists) as well as feeds, podcasting, and e-learning. Here are a couple of excerpts from her recent post at E-Meida Tidbits:

Whatweknowtshirt "I've been getting quite aggravated at the close-minded and helpless attitudes I'm still encountering from too many journalists about how the media landscape is changing. I realize that right now is a scary time for journalists who crave stability. I have immense sympathy for good, smart people (many of whom have families to support and retirements to plan) who fear the unknown. Many of the news orgs that have sheltered and supported these journalists as they ply their craft are crumbling due to their inability or unwillingness to adapt their business models -- leading to layoffs, buyouts, attrition, dwindling resources, overwork, and general demoralization.

I also know -- first hand -- that the prospect of learning new skills can be daunting. Plus, many of us have spent lots of money on j-school and many years in professional journalism honing our writing and reporting skills. We don't want to learn how to think like an entrepreneur, or an information architect, or a community manager. We just want to keep doing what we know how to do; we didn't sign up for all this extra stuff."

More than half of Americans say they tend not to trust the press

That's one of the findings of a nationwide Harris Poll of 2,302 U.S. adults surveyed online between January 15 and 22, 2008 by Harris Interactive.

"Looking at the press in general, over half (54%) of Americans say they tend not to trust them, with only 30 percent tending to trust the press. Just under half (46%) of Americans say they do not trust television, while one-third (36%) do trust them. Somewhat surprisingly, Internet news and information sites do slightly better as a plurality of Americans (41%) trust them while just one-third (34%) tend not to trust them. And, radio tends to do best among Americans as 44 percent say they tend to trust it and one-third (32%) tend not to trust radio."

As for "trusting radio," are they referring to radio news or radio in a broader sense (talk shows, etc). And why does radio (and the net) earn higher trust than TV and newspapers?

Poor Man's Steadicam - Take 2

I took a stroll around the office today with the Poor Man's Steadicam. Following the nausea-inducing tromp through the woods, I wanted to see how the tool worked under better conditions. Hard to judge without a side-by-side look, but I think this is smoother video than I could have achieved by just holding the camera. Note the second or two immediately following the transition where I'm going down some stairs.

The Good Life with David Burge

Newspapers are putting an ass whuppin' on radio stations online. Maybe they have more people, more money... whatever. Your honor, as Exhibit A I offer this video from JournalStar.com (Lincoln, NE).

David Burge isn't Comedy Central funny, but he's local celebrity funny and I find that even more charming. This trip to a minor league hockey game is fun and Mr. Burge is endearing (I hope this doesn't read as gay as I think it will). And someone did a nice job  editing the video.

Google gets into local news

Google News now allows you to localize a section of the stories. Scroll down just beneath the fold for the box to type in your city or zip code. I plugged in my local zip code for Jefferson City:

True enough, as Google News ranked #9 in Nielsen-Netratings for December — higher than USAToday.com and WashingtonPost.com.

If you're a local news guy and look at this and say, "Ah, but they missed some stories!" ... you're missing the point.

Candidates hold first debate on Internet radio program

Wisconsin State Journal: "The two candidates for Wisconsin Supreme Court will debate for the first time today -- but it won 't be face to face. The candidates will square off during a one-hour Internet radio debate hosted by a UW-Milwaukee student.

The debate is thought to be the first of its kind in a Wisconsin political race, said Kyle Duerstein, the journalism student who is hosting the program. Listeners will be able to hear the candidates debate and call in with questions. It will be the first forum featuring both candidates."

I'd love to know the back story on this. Was there no interest in such a debate by mainstream media? Did Mr. Duerstein just ask the candidates and they agreed? [Thanks, Jackie]

"Public Media"

Doc Searls says the Net makes radio and TV transmitters obsolete the moment high-enough-bandwidth wireless connectivity becomes ubiquitous.

"We’re one good UI away from the cell phone becoming a radio. (Thanks to the iPhone, it already serves as a TV.) And we’re one smart cell company away from radio- and TV-as-we-know-it from being replaced entirely -- or from moving up the next step of the evolutionary ladder. Public broadcasters know that. That’s one reason they now call themselves “public media”, a move that separates the category from its transport methods.

Will this someday be an issue for our networks? Radio Iowa. Wisconsin Radio Network. Nebraska Radio Network. Time will tell.

Why "old" media struggle online

Lost Remote's Cory Bergman on why most TV stations haven't done well online:

"I’ll give you these four reasons: 1) lack of investment in people and technology 2) unwillingness to take necessary risks 3) TV-driven power structure which results in the inability for web management to quickly allocate resources as they see fit and 4) a bizarre addiction to brand consistency, which limits creative ideas up and down the organization."

I think these apply to most "old media" companies. Brand extension is not always the way to go.

"Instead of shouting the message, hide it."

Will we still get carpet bombed by mindless 30 second commercials in the future? (And by future I mean a couple of weeks from now.) Seems unlikely, but how will savvy marketers reach --and more importantly-- engage us? How do you "reach people who are so media-saturated they block all attempts to get through."

Perhaps with alternate reality games (ARG's). That's the subject of a fascinating article by Frank Rose in this month's Wired Magazine (Issue 16.01).

"The initial clue was so subtle that for nearly two days nobody noticed it. On February 10, 2007, the first night of Nine Inch Nails' European tour, T-shirts went on sale at a 19th-century Lisbon concert hall with what looked to be a printing error: Random letters in the tour schedule on the back seemed slightly boldfaced. Then a 27-year-old Lisbon photographer named Nuno Foros realized that, strung together, the boldface letters spelled "i am trying to believe." Foros posted a photo of his T-shirt on the Spiral, the Nine Inch Nails fan forum. People started typing "iamtryingtobelieve.com" into their Web browsers. That led them to a site denouncing something called Parepin, a drug apparently introduced into the US water supply. Ostensibly, Parepin was an antidote to bioterror agents, but in reality, the page declared, it was part of a government plot to confuse and sedate citizens. Email sent to the site's contact link generated a cryptic auto-response: "I'm drinking the water. So should you." Online, fans worldwide debated what this had to do with Nine Inch Nails. A setup for the next album? Some kind of interactive game? Or what?"

I'm not a gamer. At all. But I love shit like this. Reminds me of the viral video snippets in William Gibson's Pattern Recognition. The Wired article is well worth the read.

As I watched the video demo, I imagined listening to a Missouri Tiger "broadcast." Or an all-news channel from one of our state networks. Ramsey's headline says it all.

YouTube Voter Video

Youtube I should have guessed the Google/YouTube guys would be all over the Iowa Caucuses. They've hooked up with The Des Moines Register, arguably the most powerful media outlet in Iowa, to create a YouTube channel:

"Document your caucus experience from start to finish. We want to show the nation what the caucuses are like, so bring your video camera along with you and give an on-the-ground view of your local caucuses. You can also add your own commentary or interviews with people just after the caucuses, offering their reflections on what took place."

I had to believe bloggers and podcasters and YouTube'ers would be all over this event but wasn't sure if cameras would be allowed. They are.

"Of course - these are our caucuses, and this a great opportunity to show the nation what they're like. Just be sure to be respectful of other caucus-goers and to make sure that your video footage is not a distraction to what's taking place."

And Google Maps is doing something special. but I'm not sure exactly what or where to find it. I'll update this post. If I had to guess it would be a map with all the caucus precincts, updated throughout the evening.

As I watched a couple of the videos, I was reminded of something I used to hear/say back during the early days of the net. Nobody will watch all of these. Somebody will watch each of these.

Study on "State of the Media"

From survey (of 2,000+ Americans) commissioned by Deloitte & Touche (as reported at WebProNews):

"Close to 40 percent (38%) of Americans are watching TV shows online, 36 percent use their cell phones for entertainment and 45 percent are creating Web sites, music, videos and blogs."

Boy, those numbers seem high to me. But then, most of the people I hang with are creating content of some sort so, maybe.

And this from Ken August, vice chairman and national sector leader for Deloitte & Touche's media and entertainment practice:

"I think for advertisers one of the conclusions is you don't make decisions to advertise either on television or the Internet when you want to hit all the demographics, but rather you need to have a multiplatform strategy. It shouldn't be an either or proposition."

And maybe a dash of radio?

1,000 $100 advertisers

Buzz Machine: "Newspapers are losing their own core market because they didn’t understand the scale of the internet. They still thought mass when they should have realized that small is the new big. That is, online, newspapers still threw their lot in with the big advertisers who had been the only ones who could afford their mass products. They didn’t see the mass of potential spending in a new population of small, local advertisers who never could afford to advertise in newspapers but who now could afford to buy targeted, efficient, inexpensive ads online."

"Even the online sales teams at newspaper companies didn’t how now to sell small; they were — as I once put it in a meeting — putting all their effort into saving the old $100,000 advertiser and saw getting 1,000 $100 advertisers as a distraction. The new-media divisions had already become big and old."

Jeff Jarvis goes on to offer suggestions on how newspapers can generate new, local dollars online:

"Start a new company that makes small, local advertising its sole focus. That means they need to set up automated systems to accept and place highly targeted local ads and directories. That means they need to come up with new means of selling without on-the-street sales staffs: outbound phone sales, direct response, even local sales network (instead of citizen journalists, citizen sales people), making aggressive use of the promotional power of the newspaper while you still have it. Most sales organizations with which I am familiar are just not wired for this. The math just doesn't work. It will be interesting to see which traditional media companies are able to make their sales machine work in a New Online World.

Music videos, guerrilla style

Sheryl Crow on using YouTube to promote her new CD:

"As far as I know, MTV and VH1 don't play music videos any more; it's all reality TV and game shows, so I don't know if they'll really pick up a video. To me, it's an interesting time because you used to make a video for a million dollars with a great director. Now, you spend $10,000, if that, with no hair and make-up, and do it completely guerrilla style. For example, we did a song called "God Bless This Mess" about the war and we shot it in front of the White House and nobody stopped us. It's really really exciting to just go out and shoot, like how Bob Dylan shot "Don't Look Back" -- it's just a guy with a camera and you're performing the song."

More ads flowing to blogs?

The Society for New Communications Research is a think tank on new media. They recently asked a couple of hundred advertising agencies about their plans to advertise and market in "conversational media" (blogs and podcasts and such). Among the findings:

"In the next five years, a majority of advertising and marketing professionals expect to spend more money on so-called conversational media--or online media that encompasses things like blogs and podcasts--than on advertising through traditional media such as newspapers or magazines.

Today, a majority of these agencies said that they spend about 2.5 percent of their total budgets on conversational media, but by 2012, they plan to tip that percentage to more than they spend on traditional media."

As one who has made his living from "radio spots" for 30+ years, this is hard to imagine. But five years isn't that long. I guess we'll see.

The Office writers mock studios from picket line

As the writers' strike enters day three, some writers and producers are taking to the video sharing site YouTube to express their frustrations. A YouTube channel created by the Writers Guild of America, West posted a video titled "The Office is Closed" yesterday, featuring the off-camera writers and on-camera stars of the NBC comedy "The Office.

I don't pretend to understand the subtleties and issues surrounding the writers strike, but I do know that I'd be happy to pay $2 an episode (or $5) to get The Office online. This is just one more whitecap in the sea change going on in media. The web has shifted (IMHO) the power to the creators, away from the suits.

Shoestring video production

My colleague David produced a 2 minute video for one of our clients recently. His post provides the background. I like the piece because a) it illustrates how easy and inexpensive it is to produce video and b) it effectively tells the story (public health program, in this instance).

David shot the video with a small, consumer-grade still camera (with video setting) and edited with iMovie 08. I should note this was David's first try and he did it while watching a World Series game.

Any company that has "communication" in their name, better have some people capable of producing a video like this. I have a hunch we'll wind up doing a lot of these for current and future clients.

This is a really good article by Sam Zuckerman at SFGate.com (San Francisco Chronicle):

The industry is expanding at warp speed. Blog-based media could just be poised to elbow aside traditional print and broadcast outlets to become one of the dominant sources of news, information and opinion, many observers believe."

This is a must read for anyone in the media business. Management or foot soldier.

iMove '08 (One more time)

Roger brought back some video he shot at a North Carolina Tar Heels game last month (he has the same little pocket Casio I do). I decided to take one more run at the new iMovie, and finally "got" the new version. At least I think so.  

Quickly trimmed the clips... threw in some transitions... tacked on a title and done. I can see where this would be a quick/easy solution for the typical user. While the resulting Quicktime file (20 meg .mov) looked great, everything I encoded for YouTube (I tried several times) looked shitty. Not sure why because I had the option of exporting with Quicktime, just like I do in the last version of iMovie. Bottom line: I will probably try this version of iMovie again.

Scott Adams on the future of newspapers

"...I see printed newspapers lasting until you upgrade your phone two more times. But the newspaper business can thrive online if it changes how it gathers and edits content. And clearly there will be massive amounts of consolidation. There won’t be 3,000 newspapers online. There might be a dozen. And local news will come from hometown bloggers who self-syndicate to all of the newspapers."

Newspapers doing radio (and TV)

I just listened an interview that Mark Ramsey did with a couple of guys from the San Diego Union-Tribune (runs 17 min). Twenty minutes ago I'd have described Ron James and Marc Balanky as newspapers guys. Now, I'll call them media guys.

And they're gearing up to do what we used to call radio (and, eventually, TV). A couple of things they said jumped out at me:

"We have a newsroom that works 24 hours a day" and "...we have more than 300 reporters."

I flashed on all the empty or near-empty radio newsrooms out there. These guys are serious as a heart attack and I'd be damned worried if I were "just" a radio station in that market. On the other hand, if you aren't already well down the road to being more than just a radio station, don't sweat it. Squeeze what you can from old Bossie and remember the good times.

"Things we were told about online that were wrong."

Steve Safran at Lost Remote takes a look back at some of the responses to his suggestions regarding the web. These bring back a lot of memories:

  • Nobody will break news on their site before the story airs
  • Newspapers won’t put much news online because it will cannibalize sales
  • Nobody will buy web advertising
  • Only young people use the web, and they don’t want news
  • The bubble has burst - there’s no future in the web now
  • There is no need to hire a web-only salesperson
  • News websites will never “blog” or have anything to do with blogging
  • Social networking tools don’t belong on news sites
  • The networks will never send programming directly to the audience and ignore the locals
  • People won’t watch video online because the quality is not high enough
  • People won’t watch video on an iPod because the picture is not big enough
  • Viewers won’t upload video and pictures because it’s too hard to do

Scott Donation, blogging at Advertising Age, says your customers are more important than your brand:

Missed video opportunity

Barb's interviewing law students today, for summer associate jobs (for next summer, I assume). I believe she said she had 19 interviews today, which works out to about 15 minutes for each student.

I would have loved to record these sessions. Shoot from straight on if possible, tight head/shoulders shot.

The students are probably nervous anyway and the camera would just aggravate that. No idea what I'd get but I think it might be sort of interesting.

Mark Ramsey: "You're not in the 'radio' business anymore

Everything is OKMr. Ramsey says the advertising industry is about to redefine radio's "category." According to a report by MediaVest, radio is now "audio":

"In a new report being circulated to clients, MediaVest has adopted the position that terrestrial broadcast radio should no longer be looked at as a discrete medium in communications plans, but as part of a greater array of audio media--including satellite, online, mobile and a variety of personal media device technologies, such as iPods, other MP3 players, and even television, which increasingly is being used as an audio-only medium."

Ouch.

I agree with Mr. Ramsey that a) this has been coming for a bit and b) it is an important shift that too many "broadcasters" still don't get. I encourage you to read the full post.

Newspapers beat TV at local video

Lost Remote points us to the latest blog entry from Bill Adee, the associate managing editor for innovation at the Chicago Tribune who wants the paper to be “the main online source of video for Chicagoland users.” And to get there, he says the Tribune has 31 staff photographers with video cameras, and the multimedia team has video cameras.

Again from Lost Remote's Michael Gay: "Let’s be conservative and say that’s 40 video cameras shooting video around Chicago. After working in Chicago, I can tell you with certainty that there is no TV station with that many cameras out on the streets."

Why would any reporter (TV, print, radio) hit the street without a digital camera (and the knowledge to use it)?

Shopping for a digital video camera

It's time to replace the Sony camcorder and I welcome suggestions and advice from one and all. Here are the features I think I want:

  • Digital. Records to SD or SDHC cards* MPEG4 (H.264)
  • Recording time: 30-40 min
  • Accepts external mic
  • Can mount on tripod
  • Smaller the better
  • Firewire? Why would I need this if I can just pull the file across to the Mac?

If you know of, or spot a camera with these features, holler at me. I'm open on price if it has all or most of these features.

Sony Handycam vs. Casio EX-S770

I've often wondered why my video doesn't look as good as other clips I watch on YouTube. I chalked it up to equipment but learned this week that I have not been properly encoding my video before uploading to Google Video or YouTube. I'm hoping that will improve my stuff.

But today I decided to shoot a few minutes (3.5) with my Sony Handycam (DCR-TRV740) for comparison with the little Casio I've been using. I really expected to see a noticeable difference and while the sound was certainly better, I can't say the video was that much improved.

It's quite possible I still don't have my video shit together in terms of encoding but I'll eventually get that figured out. And I guess I'm pleased the the little pocket Casio stacks up so well against the larger Sony camcorder. All of which brings me back to my original fondness for the Casio: it fits in your pocket so it's always with me.

But I'm going to make greater use of the Sony (with tripod and good mic). And if you know how to tweak video for YouTube, I'd love to talk.

State Fair video contest

David Brazeal (the Man Behind the Curtain at Learfield InterAction) points us to this entry in the Missouri State Fair Video Contest.

"Show us in 60 seconds or less how you are preparing for the State Fair by entering the “Preparing for the Big Show” video contest. Create your work-of-art, then post the video to YouTube with the tag “mostatefair”. The grand prize winner will have his or her video premiered before the Jason Aldean concert opening night of the Fair."

When pros see stuff like this or the summer intern video I posted earlier... I'm sure all they see poorly shot/edited amateur video. When I see these, I think, "Damn, that's clever!" Or funny. Or interesting. And I'm reminded that almost anyone can now play in this sandbox. I love that.

Which only means that we'll have to pay for the good stuff.

Amazon launches podcast network

Amazon.com today officially launched the Amazon Podcasts network, an original podcast offering that features four channels of free content: Amazon BookClips, Music You Should Hear, Significant Seven and
Amazon Wire.

  • Amazon BookClips – A weekly podcast offering customers a free sneak peek at some of the most popular soon-to-be-released audiobooks.
  • Music You Should Hear – A free, weekly MP3 podcast whereby customers receive an MP3 recording featuring complete songs from developing and indie artists, selected by Amazon’s music editors.
  • Significant Seven – A monthly podcast in which book editors from Amazon.com talk about seven of the most exciting upcoming books before they are released.
  • Amazon Wire – An exclusive, biweekly podcast featuring interviews with some of today’s hottest authors, actors, directors and musicians.
All of these sound like something I would listen to regularly. Will the typical podcaster get rich? No. Will companies like Amazon find creative and profitable ways to use podcasting? Wait, wait... I know this one... [via Podcasting News]

NHL Capitals make news by reporting it

The Washington Capitals, a National Hockey League team, plan to send four reporters to Moscow to cover the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship (underway). The Capitals will partner with Clearspring Technologies to deliver audio, video and text content to their site for Caps fans, as well as to local, national and international media outlets via a specialized widget.

The local medea elected not to cover the event so the Capitals decided the could and would. And share the news with new and traditional media outlets and syndicate it far and wide. [E-Media Tidbits]

My mind reels at the implications of this.

Let's say the Pooterville Drum and Bugle Corps make it to the national finals in Bangor, Maine. The local radio station can't afford to send a broadcast crew but the kids could throw up a blog and go crazy posting video, audio, stills, minute-by-minute reports... all brought to you by the Pooterville Sports Boosters Club. Does anyone doubt that a couple of passionate, knowledgeable fans can provide better, more complete coverage than the local radio station? And if the local station wants to air some of their stuff...great.

If I were running the local radio station (or newspaper, or TV station)... I think I might encourage this and provide the tools, training and web-hosting.
