I've really got to start writing some of this down

I love WordPress. I won’t bore you with all the reasons. But one very big one is: plug-ins. These are little add-on’s that add extra functionality to your blog/website. Today one of our sites needed a way to display multiple videos on a single page. I found several plug-in’s that looked like good candidates and settled on one called YouTube SimpleGallery. It’s free but I made a small donation to the developer.
I usually test plug-in’s here, to get the hang of them. If you click on the VIDEO tab at the top of the page, you’ll see a bunch of thumbnail images that –when clicked– play the video on YouTube.
You can also configure the plug-in so the video pops up in its own window.

There is no shortage of audio player plug-in’s for WordPress. But I’ve had a dickens of a time finding one that works reliably with the theme I’m using here at smays.com (and on a bunch of other sites, for that matter).
I sort of like the way the player looks and it feels like the audio begins playing a little faster (than a simple text link to the MP3 file). But I’m tired of screwing around with these things and have decided (for now) to skip the Flash or Java or whatever the hell kind of code these things use.
I don’t know from shit when it comes to Flash and Java and all that so I’m just gonna go with a plain old text link. Should load whatever app or media player you have configured for MP3 files. And if you’d like to download the MP3 file, now you can.
Ahh. Feel better already.

The iPhone is not a great camera and I am not a great photographer. But I like taking pictures. During the 14 months I’ve had my iPhone, I’ve taken a couple of hundred photos with it, posting some on flickr and some to a Mobile Me gallery.
I’ve been culling and tagging photos this week and realized that I’ve been using the iPhone for pix and leaving my Casio in the bag. And the Casio takes MUCH better photos.
The new plan is to keep the Casio in my pocket and use the iPhone only when I need to get a photo (or video) online quickly.

So that’s one more (small) device to carry around. But I don’t want to wind up with a 1,000 photos of marginal quality.
I’m also gonna keep the iPhone pix segregated (on flickr) from the Casio photos.
If you run into me, ask me if I have the Casio in my pocket.

Saw that my friend Aaron was trying out an app (for his BlackBerry) called TwitVid. I downloaded the iPhone version and uploaded a a few seconds shot in a dark room with floor lamp for light.
Here’s some I streamed from the iPhone usinging qik…
…and the one below was on ustream. Poor light and the dumb-ass with the iPhone (me) wouldn’t keep it still.
And finally, twitcam. This was shot with the BT-1 wireless webcam. You’ll have to wade through the 20 sec pre-roll spot.
So, three different cameras using four different services. Not much of a test. I need to do this again using the iPhone one each. But since I’ve come this far… I’ll leave these up for whatever value they might have.

I took the little BT-1 Bluetooth webcam back to the Missouri capitol yesterday for a hearing. Used twitcam to stream. The audio was poor to marginal and the video about what you’d expect from a $150 camera. It was basically a final field test and I was pleased.
If you look closely (red arrow) in the top left corner of the photo above, you can see the aluminum legs of the small tripod holding the camera. I was about 20-25 feet away. The camera was very unobtrusive and it was convenient to be untethered and out of the way.
One of these days there will be a high-profile news conference we’ll want to stream live and I’ll just grab the BT-1 and the MacBook Pro. We don’ need no stinkin’ satellite truck.

Streaming live video has never been easier. Ironically, the bigger challenge is coming up with something anyone would care to watch. Which I clearly demonstrated this morning at the Coffee Zone.
In the photo above, you can see my BT-1 wireless webcam atop the Rocket Fuel storage tank. I was sitting about 25 feet away and never lost the signal.
Instead of uStream or qik (which works with mobile phones only, as far as I can tell), I used a nifty site called TwitCam. The screenshot below is really all there is to twitcam. And, yes, it’s free. For now. You just log in with your Twitter info and go. TwitCam records as it streams. No option for live stream only, as far as I could determine. I don’t see how video can get much easier than this.
As soon as I can come up with something worth the bandwidth, I’ll take this back to the state capitol.
