I took a stroll around the office today with the Poor Man’s Steadicam. Following the nausea-inducing tromp through the woods, I wanted to see how the tool worked under better conditions. Hard to judge without a side-by-side look, but I think this is smoother video than I could have achieved by just holding the camera. Note the second or two immediately following the transition where I’m going down some stairs.

Hmm. I don’t know man. I’d like to see the same take with a hand-held. The video looks rushed. Take it slow. Get some shots. A lot less motion. Think of the video camera the way the doc would take a still photo. There’s nothing wrong with editing the stuff you’ve shot. But, the editor can’t turn shit video into gold.
I’ve never used a “steady cam” but have heard they are a bitch to figure out.
Then again, the “NYPD Blue” documentary style is what it’s all about now.
In the end, I love what you’re doing
In response to Edward’s comment: I was trying to test the steadicam by moving quickly thru the building. I can think of few situations where I would shoot this much on the move. Maybe walking down a carnival middway or the crowd at a football game. I think we’re down with the steadicam for now.
